Join us for the second instalment of this two-part Solidarity Session on protecting agricultural land for the purpose of agroecological food production. This time, with a focus on establishing an agrarian trust in Australia.

During last month’s Solidarity Session, AFSA President Tammi Jonas explored the issue of protecting agricultural land in Australia, due to encroaching development and corporate land grabs across the country. This month’s session forms part of a two-part series on land, focusing on the establishment of an agrarian trust as a solution to providing commons for food production.

For the past 12 months, AFSA has been in deep conversation with diverse food system actors, forming a working group on setting up an agrarian trust in Australia to ask critical questions such as:

  • Why do we need an agrarian trust?
  • What would it look like in Australia?
  • How would we fund it?
  • What examples can we draw from?

Since then, the Agrarian Trust Working Group has been hard at work exploring funding models to purchase land for commons. At this stage, we’ve been unsuccessful in grant applications, so now we want to hear from you–the people–on alternative ways we can raise funds for the project.

Following a brief introduction, we will open up the floor to hear from First Peoples, agroecology-oriented farmers, food producers and communities who are keen to protect agricultural land across the country, and provide input on setting up an agrarian trust funding model in Australia.
