Following the launch of AFSA’s Legal Defence Fund (LDF) in 2017, AFSA has been providing critical legal support to farmers across the country who are facing common challenges within the legal and planning system. Over the years, AFSA has helped countless farmers with questions such as:
- Do I need a permit to be a pig farmer in Victoria?
- How do I obtain a water licence for a market garden in New South Wales?
- What do I need to know about the auditing process as an egg producer in Queensland?
- Can AFSA help me navigate the Tasmanian planning system?
As we’ve become more adept to helping farmers answer these questions, in 2023 we realised it’s time to release a comprehensive AFSA Legal Guide, made freely available to all producers within our food system. The Legal Guide compiles rigorous information put together by farmers and legal professionals to provide advice on guidance on common planning and legal challenges in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. The AFSA Legal Guide is intended to be a living document, meaning we will update it regularly as legislation, policy and regulation changes, and will expand it to include other states once we have the resources to do so.
If you wish to make a donation to the LDF to enable the development of the Legal Guide, email us at admin@afsa.org.au. Or, if you have any questions about the LDF or legal guide, please email us at legal@afsa.org.au.
Note: AFSA emphasises that this guide is not be used in lieu of formal legal advice where needed. Although AFSA has sought legal support to develop this guide, we strongly advise that you seek your own legal advice to ensure you are following legislation, guidelines and regulation administered by state and local governments.
