The City of Melbourne, an AFSA member, has launched a food policy – Food City. Food City will guide coordinated action and decision-making to improve Melbourne’s food system. The policy aims to improve people’s health and wellbeing by promoting a food system that is secure, healthy, sustainable, thriving and socially inclusive.
The City of Melbourne is involved in some great activities as part of Food City. Included are:
- Supporting the Grow It Local – Local Growers Feast held at Queen Victoria Market during the Age Good Food Month
- Sponsoring the production of AFSA’s Just Food documentary
- Launching Green Light Eat Right, the City’s healthy and nutritious food choices program
- Launching the sustainable food information tool
- Reducing food waste through a 12 month pilot of the Degraves Street Shared Recycling Facility, a food dehydrator machine, education and behaviour change program
- An EcoCity Food Forum which brought together organisations and individuals who are working towards a sustainable, resilient and fair food system
- The Melbourne Conversation topic of Feeding a Growing Melbourne, issues and opportunities
