When someone with the business acumen, experience and wealth of Dick Smith admits that Australia’s food system is broken, you know we have a problem.

Dick is not accustomed to defeat, but he admits that Dick Smith Foods will probably stop operating soon.  In this interview he argues for policies by government that are essentially food sovereignty policies.

What Coles and Woolworths have forgotten is the old business truism “If you live by price, you die by price”.  The duopoly are sowing the seeds of their own destruction by concentrating on price alone and externalising the the social and environmental costs of food.  To be fair to the duopoly, they are but a symptom of deeper systemic issues that values profit maximisation above all else.
