AFSA commends the Food Regulation System for acknowledging the need for significant food regulation reform. We note positive steps taken to ensure that regulation supports socially-just and ecologically-sound food systems. However, we seek to underscore that large-scale industrial agriculture and corporations still exercise excessive market control over independent producers, who play a critical role in feeding local communities. In addition, the consultation paper notes pressing challenges, such as climate change and emerging diseases, will put significant pressure on food systems and its stakeholders.
