About AFSA: The Agroecology & Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) has traditionally been a farmer-led, volunteer-run organisation on the frontline of food sovereignty in so-called Australia. With a change to the organisation’s constitution, AFSA is now transitioning towards equitable farmer and First Peoples co-leadership. AFSA exists to support farmers, First Peoples, food producers, workers and allies as they tackle the challenges of producing ethical, ecologically sound, and socially just food in a world where corporate control is increasing.

About the role: The First Peoples Focal Group Coordinator is an exciting new role designed to support the First Peoples Focal Group (FPFG) and its transition towards formal co-governance of AFSA. You will be involved with the working groups and members across the organisation’s First Peoples program areas. Duties and responsibilities will include management and administrative tasks that will vary on a week-to-week basis following organisational priorities.

You will also liaise with and support the other staff within AFSA – the General Coordinator, the Paralegal and the Communications Officer – and other occasional collaborators hired for specific campaigns and/or working groups.

The First Peoples Focal Group Coordinator must identify as First Nations. This role is important for ensuring AFSA’s Indigenous membership, and the strategic objectives of the First Peoples’ Focal Group, are accurately represented within AFSA. Through this role, you will become a key piece of the national infrastructure supporting Indigenous food sovereignty.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Manage incoming emails, enquiries and internal communications
  • Work directly with the First Peoples’ Focal Group to support group’s strategic objectives, such as engaging with Indigenous members
  • Schedule FPFG meetings and support FPFG working groups (agendas, minutes, actions and follow ups/updates)
  • Where relevant to the FPFG, coordinate with and support other AFSA staff, including the Communications Officer, Paralegal, & General Coordinator
  • Together with the General Coordinator, and where relevant to the FPFG, help coordinate events. Remote and in-person events include Solidarity Sessions, the Annual Food Sovereignty Convergence, Annual AFSA Retreat, the Deep Winter Agrarian Gathering, and Agroecology dialogues
  • Represent the FPFG at relevant external meetings, including international meetings
  • Where relevant to the FPFG, work with the Comms Officer to assist in content development, editing, and proofreading for media, socials, blog posts, website, etc. If desired, there will be opportunities for writing

Key Selection Criteria

  • Good organisational skills, particularly working across multiple projects, timelines, and stakeholder groups
  • Relational, approachable, and working for collective benefit
  • Confidence to organise and delegate tasks
  • Excellent admin skills
  • Excellent communicator, with strong writing ability

About you

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Indigenous food sovereignty and has an understanding or interest in our communities having more say over our food systems.

An understanding of First Peoples First approaches to engagement and community governance models is desirable. This includes experience or awareness of maintaining community databases (e.g. Excel) with care for data sovereignty and privacy.

You have strong desktop research skills, with the ability to gather and share information in ways that are useful and accessible to community. While not essential, knowledge of the principles of Agroecology is desirable.

Academic or trade qualifications
