Volunteer Communications Role with the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA)
Do you have a way with words and a passion for food sovereignty? The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) is seeking a volunteer to join our team and lead our communications efforts. If you’re looking for an opportunity to sharpen your skills while making a meaningful difference, we’d love to hear from you!
About AFSA
AFSA is on the frontline of food sovereignty in Australia, supporting farmers, food producers, workers and allies as they tackle the challenges of producing ethical, ecologically sound and socially just food in a world where corporate control is increasing.
We have current campaigns operating and developing around:
🌱 Smallholder access to abattoirs
💧 Water rights for First Nations communities and small-scale farmers
🌏 Advocating for scale-appropriate planning controls and food safety standards
A 15-year-old volunteer-run organisation, AFSA is driving initiatives and advocating for policy changes that empower farmers and local communities to create resilient, independent food systems.
What You’ll Do
As a Volunteer Communications Lead, you will:
- Oversee AFSA’s communications, including social media, to amplify our work and campaigns.
- Share AFSA’s ongoing initiatives with engaging, accessible content to inform and inspire our community.
- Work closely with Tammi Jonas (Focal Point for Farmers, National Committee) and Jessie Power (General Coordinator, AFSA).
- Collaborate with AFSA’s existing Communications Sub-committee as part of a supportive, creative team.
What We’re Looking For
- A communications intern or volunteer available for approximately eight hours per week for 12 months.
- Someone passionate about improving Australia’s food and farming system.
- Experience or interest in social media management, content creation, or communications strategy.
- Experience with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Mailchimp, and WordPress is desirable.
- Experience creating designs in Canva, Adobe or similar is desirable.
What You’ll Gain
By volunteering with AFSA, you will be well placed to further develop valuable communications skills while contributing to real-world change. Join a dedicated team advocating for food sovereignty and build meaningful connections with farmers, First Peoples, activists, and community leaders.
